March 7th: “I Care” Day
Today’s focus during Obesity Care Week (OCW2020) is about humanizing obesity. Unlike most diseases, obesity is heavily stigmatized. It is a common belief that people can “cure” obesity just by eating less and moving more. Unfortunately, the belief that obesity is a character flaw and a result of laziness, or a lack of willpower, prevents people from getting the care they need. That’s why it’s so important to challenge perceptions of obesity and share the voices of people it impacts.
During “I Care” Day, Obesity Care Week wanted to bring some of those voices to the spotlight. This is a great reminder about why obesity matters to all of us for many different reasons.
Why Do You Care about Obesity?
- Are you personally affected by obesity?
- Do you have a loved one who is affected by obesity?
- Are you a healthcare professional who works with patients affected by obesity?
- Do you have an interest in public health? Policy change? Patient advocacy? Disease stigma?
By sharing why you care about obesity, you too can challenge perceptions, spread awareness and make a difference. The OAC has a way for you to raise your voice year-round.
Thank you for helping us support OCW2020!
