Update: The OAC and ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) have sent more than 100 letters to insurers about this topic. Future letters are planned for Governors and insurance commissioners.
The OAC has been closely monitoring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients. Across the country, elective surgeries, procedures and appointments are being delayed as staff and resources are needed in the treatment of the virus. We know that many of you are seeking bariatric surgery and are currently part of a medical weight management program with pre-surgical requirements.
As always, the OAC is here to support you. That is why we are asking insurance providers to suspend their pre-surgical requirements during this time and ensure that patients are not penalized for the impact that COVID-19 is having nationwide.

If you or a loved one is personally being affected by this issue, we hope you will let us know. You can submit your story to OAC’s Access to Care Reporting Tool by Clicking Here. Please include the name of your insurer/employer through which your pre-surgery requirements are set. As reports continue to come in, we will continue to contact more providers. We will do our best to help you in your situation as we advocate on your behalf.
