Tampa, Fla. – On June 1, the OAC unveiled a new blog series, authored by Melinda J. Watman, BSN, MSN, CNM, MBA, on the topic of weight bias. The series takes an in-depth look at weight bias, perceptions about weight, personal relationships with weight and much more.

“As an OAC member, I wanted to do something about weight bias. Through this blog series, I want to explore weight bias and decrease the pervasiveness of it. Often times, we do not realize how weight bias affects our minds or even our own biases,” said Melinda J. Watman, BSN, MSN, CNM, MBA.

Melinda’s first blog post digs deep into the issue of weight bias and provides readers with a unique way to measure their own biases toward obesity. In future blog posts, she will also share personal insights into her own struggles with weight and weight bias.

“Weight bias is truly one of the last acceptable forms of discrimination in today’s society. It is present in so many aspects of life, such as education, employment, entertainment, healthcare and more. The OAC has led the charge in combating weight bias; however, there is still much work to be done. Melinda’s blog will help educate individuals about weight bias and hopefully energize folks to take a stand against weight bias,” said Joe Nadglowski, Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) President and CEO.

The new blog series encourages discussion and feedback from all readers. “Opening up the discussion of weight bias can often be a difficult task. But we need to be able to talk about this in order to do something about it. We must not fear weight bias or what we might unveil about ourselves as we explore this very sensitive subject, said Melinda.

The OAC is a National nonprofit charity dedicated to helping individuals affected by obesity. The OAC was formed to bring together individuals struggling with weight issues and provide educational resources and advocacy tools.
