OAC On the Hill: Advocating for the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA)

March OAA

On Tuesday, Feb. 27, OAC leaders and volunteers joined the rest of the Obesity Care Advocacy Network (OCAN) for a Day on the Hill in Washington, D.C., to advocate for the passage of TROA. OCAN’s mission is to unite stakeholders and the obesity community around key obesity-related education, policy and legislative efforts in order to elevate obesity on the national agenda. TROA addresses the two major issues in obesity treatment: the expansion of a list of healthcare professionals who could provide intensive behavioral therapy beyond primary care and the removal of the Medicare Part D prohibition on coverage for FDA-approved obesity drugs.

Throughout the day, 103 legislative visits were completed by 88 advocates, including 15 OAC members and several OAC Board Members.

“Special thanks to those who joined us on Capitol Hill as well as all of those who advocated from home, whether through social media using the #OACAction hashtag or by letters, emails and phone calls to elected officials,” said Joe Nadglowski, OAC President/CEO. “Our message about the importance of comprehensive care for obesity is beginning to resonate due to our dedicated volunteers and advocates.”

Although this legislation is focused on improving access to obesity treatments for Medicare beneficiaries, TROA is important to ALL Americans because private and employer-based insurance plans oftentimes base their coverage on matching Medicare coverage.

Are you interested in advocating for TROA? The OAC makes it easy. Simply use our Legislative Action Center to write to your elected officials, share our own personal story and help your legislators better understand the need for expanding access to these critical obesity treatment tools.
