On Monday, the OAC Your Weight Matters Convention registration will open and I can’t wait. Last year, was the very first convention and it went beyond all my expectations. The speakers and presenters were some of the best in their field and shared all the latest information and research on member requested topics from losing weight, maintaining weight-loss, the emotional journey (the hardest part in my opinion, more about that in a bit), issues in advocacy that affect access to prevention programs and treatment. I’m looking forward to what will be offered this year. I know it will be great.

Beyond the great education offered, was the opportunity to connect and hang out with an awesome group of people that all understand the physical and emotional issues those affected by obesity face. Obesity can be isolating, I spent a lot of years saying, “No, sorry I can’t join you” and sitting on the sidelines watching my life go by. For me, the Convention was a safe place to do something I hadn’t done in decades. Wear a dress. I haven’t worn a dress in public in decades. I have body image issues I think a lot of people affected by obesity can relate to but the sense of community and vibe at the convention was welcoming, understanding and safe. Unbeknownst to the OAC, they also held an inspiring convention session on “Body Image” right before dinner so with that boost of confidence and surrounded by new and old friends who understand and can relate cheering me on, I wore a dress and danced the night away in it.

If you are sitting on the sidelines, no matter where you are in your journey for better health I want to personally invite you to attend. Being surrounded by people who “get it” is one of the best feelings in the world. I can’t wait to experience that this year. I hope to see you in Arizona this summer.
