Tampa, Fla. –Beginning this weekend, spring Walk from Obesity events will kick off the 2010 Walk from Obesity season. Across the United States walkers will take to the streets, shopping malls, high school tracks and many other locations to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic, health and much more.

“We are incredibly excited to start the 2010 Walk season with the upcoming spring Walks. The Walk from Obesity is an excellent opportunity for all of us to get outside, get active and most importantly raise awareness. There simply is no other event like the Walk from Obesity where individuals affected by obesity can join together and express their passion in the fight against obesity,” said Joe Nadglowski, Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) President and CEO and ASMBS Foundation Executive Director.

For more than 7 years, the Walk from Obesity has been an integral part of the healthcare community. Walkers, loved ones, friends, healthcare professionals and many others gather throughout the U.S. in support of one another’s achievements, struggles and goals. To date, the Walk has raised more than $3.9 million to further the independent missions of the ASMBS Foundation and the OAC. Starting this Saturday, May 1, the following cities will be hosting spring Walks:

  • Newport News, VA – May 1
  • Schenectady, NY  – May 1
  • Youngtown, OH – May 15
  • Grand Junction, CO – May 15

The Walk from Obesity was established to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic and to support initiatives focusing on prevention, education, research, treatment and advocacy. Proceeds from the Walk benefit the independent educational and research initiatives of the ASMBS Foundation and the Obesity Action Coalition. Walkers raise money by asking friends, family and co-workers to sponsor them. In addition to walker income, funds are raised through sponsorship, matching gifts, corporate contributions and other fundraising activities.
