Tampa, Fla., May 2, 2013 – Statement from Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) President and CEO Joseph Nadglowski:

“The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) applauds the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists’ (AACE) recommendation to now consider obesity management as an integral part of the overall treatment plan to effectively reduce morbidity, mortality and disability in the majority of patients affected by obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

The inclusion of obesity management by AACE is a tremendous step forward in proactively addressing patients affected by obesity and type 2 diabetes. The OAC strongly supports these recommendations as excess weight and obesity greatly increases an individual’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes and urges payors in both the public and private sectors to adopt policies that allow expanded insurance coverage for such services.

Today, more than 72 million adult Americans are affected by the disease of obesity. As obesity is often associated with diabetes, the OAC strongly encourages all healthcare professionals to follow AACE’s recommendations to effectively manage and treat individuals affected by obesity and type 2 diabetes.”
