Tampa, FL – Today, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee eliminated their IQ testing requirement for those seeking weight-loss surgery.
In recent weeks, the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) has advocated for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to remove the IQ testing on the basis of it perpetuating the negative stigma associated with obesity and discriminating against those affected by obesity wishing to access treatment.
The OAC believes it is imperative for BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee to build an open relationship with healthcare professionals and patients to form and set acceptable non-discriminatory policy guidelines/requirements for those seeking access to care.
“The elimination of the IQ testing requirement is a proactive step in the right direction for those seeking to access the much needed medical care of obesity. I thank BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee for their recent decision and invite them to work with the OAC to develop acceptable coverage policies and requirements,” said Joseph Nadglowski, Jr. OAC President and CEO.
