Because of You
The year of 2014 has been a year of remarkable progress in obesity — because of you and your support for the Obesity Action Coalition.
For the first time in years, an expert panel for the FDA has voted for the approval of a new medical device for treating obesity. By the widest margin we can remember — 14 to 1 — another FDA panel of experts voted to recommend approval of the fourth new obesity treatment in three years. The chairman of that panel commended OAC members and others for their testimony before the committee
A few years ago, businesses were fleeing from investments in obesity research. Policies to address obesity and health were formulated without input from anyone actually affected by obesity. Too often, weight bias and even fat shaming were visible and tolerated.
Because of you and the voice you raise through the OAC, big changes are under way.
For more than a decade, I’ve devoted my career to evidence-based approaches for obesity and to reducing the destructive effects of pervasive weight bias. I know many people who have devoted their entire careers.
But the biggest change I’ve seen has come from the OAC providing information, support, empowerment and advocacy for the people affected by obesity.
This is why I give my money and time to the OAC. I hope that as 2014 comes to a close, you will include the OAC in your generous year-end giving. I hope that in the coming year, you will step up and lend your voice to this movement.
It’s because of you that we are making progress. With your support, we will continue and pick up the pace of change.
