USA Today recently published a piece titled, “‘Weight isn’t always within your control’: Why some states are prioritizing obesity patients for the COVID-19 vaccine.”
This thought-provoking piece highlights why people with obesity are being prioritized for the COVID-19 vaccine. The OAC’s Chairwoman, Patty Nece, JD, was quoted multiple times throughout the article as she expresses her disappointment in people who have criticized people with obesity who are prioritized for the COVID-19 vaccine.
This led to the discussion of weight bias and obesity awareness. The OAC’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications, James Zervios, commented on how common weight bias has been in the healthcare industry and how that can often lead to people avoiding treatment and care. USA Today then brought to light Obesity Care Week, which occurred all throughout last week.
