Advocacy Update*

Updated on: 10/1/2018

We’re happy to share that Thursday’s Advocacy Day on September 27th was a roaring success! More than 60 individuals visited 54 Senate and 11 House Representatives that covered 38 different states. Altogether, TROA advocates visited the offices of more than 65 elected officials! OAC is proud of the amazing work our advocates are doing to improve access to obesity care across the country.

What is TROA?

If passed, the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act will give older Americans with Medicare expanded access to meaningful obesity treatment tools. Specifically, these tools include behavioral weight-loss counseling and prescription medications for long-term weight management.

But if you’re not on Medicare, you may be thinking, “Well…what’s that got to do with me?” Though this legislation directly impacts Medicare beneficiaries, it indirectly impacts all of us. Many other private and employer-based insurance plans are often modeled off of matching Medicare coverage. This means that passing TROA is a critical step to improving access to valuable health services that could help millions of America struggling with obesity.
