Tampa, Fla. – September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness month, and the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) is taking this month to recognize the weight bias and bullying that exists amongst children who are affected by excess weight or obesity.

Studies show that at least 30% of girls with excess weight and 24% of boys with excess weight report being teased by peers at school. “Weight bias in children and adolescents continues to be a prominent fixture for our younger generations. We know that the effects of bullying can stay with children well into adulthood. Being a child living with the disease of obesity can be difficult enough without having to feel mistreated or judged unfairly for it. It’s time that we recognize this negative impact and work to stop weight bias,” said Joe Nadglowski, OAC President and CEO.

Throughout the month of September, the OAC will focus on raising money to help stop childhood weight bias and bullying through education, advocacy, awareness and support. You can show your support of this important cause by donating to the OAC today at ObesityAction.org/Donate. Every contribution goes toward making the world a better place for children affected by excess weight or obesity.

The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), a more than 75,000 member-strong National nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by the disease of obesity through education, advocacy and support.
