The Conversation of Weight – It’s Important

Throughout the past few weeks, the OAC has released two new programs designed to help facilitate the conversation of weight between an individual and their healthcare provider:

Far too often we hear about individuals who want to talk to their healthcare provider about their weight but do not know where to begin or how to start. The OAC has made it a priority to help individuals affected by excess weight, obesity or severe obesity have the conversation of weight with their healthcare provider. Additionally, the OAC is making it an organizational priority to educate physicians on how they can also easily initiate the conversation of weight with their patients. Let’s take a closer look at these programs:

YWM Campaign

The Your Weight Matters Campaign has set its sights on encouraging ALL Americans to take the Your Weight Matters online challenge and pledge to talk their healthcare provider about their weight. By making the pledge, individuals will receive the Your Weight Matters Toolkit, which was specifically designed to help prepare individuals for that first appointment with their healthcare provider to discuss the issue of weight.

To date, thousands of individuals have taken the Campaign Challenge.

OAC/ACP Guidebook & DVD

The “Excess Weight and Your Health – A Guide to Effective, Healthy Weight-loss” DVD & Guidebook is a collaborative project that is proudly produced by the OAC and the American College of Physicians (ACP). The focus of this project is to provide a FREE resource to healthcare professionals to help them initiate the conversation of weight with their patients. Both the DVD and Guidebook provide in-depth information on weight, health, weight-loss options, nutrition and more.

To date, the OAC has fulfilled more than 1,000 orders in the first week of the launch.

Importance of these Programs
Looking at these two programs, there’s no doubt that there’s a central theme – the conversation of weight. In order for us to effectively address the obesity epidemic, we must begin to have that conversation of weight. Make no mistake about it, weight is a very personal matter; however, it is our hope that through programs, such as the Your Weight Matters Campaign and the “Excess Weight and Your Health – A Guide to Effective, Healthy Weight-loss” DVD & Guidebook, weight can be a topic that is easily discussed between the patient and their healthcare provider. Because after all, it is an important conversation.
