State employees in Wisconsin just accomplished a major win. The Wisconsin Group Insurance Board recently made the decision to help state employees get the medical care they need. Starting in 2027, the state health plan will cover obesity medications like GLP-1s.

For the first time, Wisconsin employees will be able to access obesity medications, like GLP-1s, with a $200 copay. This is a positive step toward making science-based care more affordable for the people who serve the state. The coverage decision shows that representatives and insurance companies are starting to follow the science and improve access to life changing and life saving treatments.

“OAC commends the Wisconsin Group Insurance Board for taking a meaningful step toward improving access to obesity care,” said Dr. Tracy Zvenyach, Vice President of Advocacy and Research for the Obesity Action Coalition. A Wisconsin native and resident of Madison, Dr. Zvenyach has spent years fighting for better policy in Wisconsin and across the country.

“People affected by obesity deserve access to approved treatment options. While more work remains, this decision signals progress toward a more equitable approach to treating obesity as a complex chronic disease,” she continues.

This victory is a direct result of advocates and health experts engaging with the board over several years educating them that obesity is a serious medical condition worth investing in. However, this is just one win. Our team at the OAC and its partner organizations understand that affordability is a top barrier to care, which is why we will continue to fight until every person with obesity, in every state, has their right to dignity and quality medical care respected.
