Maryland’s obesity care legislation has officially become law, marking an important step forward for patients seeking access to obesity treatment.

While this new law removes barriers and creates opportunities for expanded access, coverage is not automatically guaranteed. OAC will continue monitoring implementation and advocating to ensure patients can fully benefit from these policy changes.

For people living with obesity, access to care can affect every part of the treatment journey. It can determine whether someone is able to talk with their healthcare provider about available options, receive timely support and make decisions based on their health needs, not just what their insurance will cover.

Obesity is a chronic disease, and patients deserve access to the full range of science-based care. That may include nutrition support, behavioral health resources, physical activity guidance, medical care, medications, surgery or other treatment options recommended by a qualified healthcare provider. When coverage barriers stand in the way, patients may be left without the tools they need to manage their health.

Maryland’s new law helps move the state closer to recognizing obesity care as an important part of healthcare. It also creates an opportunity to continue educating policymakers, health plans and the public about why coverage matters.

Advocates across Maryland helped build momentum for this legislation by sharing their experiences and reminding lawmakers that coverage decisions have a direct impact on the people they represent.

“Advocating for obesity care coverage has taught me that lawmakers listen when we share real stories,” said Rachael Batabyal, MD. “Our voices matter far more than we realize. Change only happens when we show up, speak up and share our experiences.”

OAC Member Anita S. also emphasized that everyone can play a role in creating change, regardless of their advocacy experience.

“Change happens when people speak up. I used to think you had to be an expert or public speaker to advocate, but I’m simply a Marylander living with obesity who believes everyone deserves access to compassionate, evidence-based care. Your voice matters, whether you tell your story, join an advocacy group or simply like and share a post. Every action counts, and together, we are making change.”

At the same time, implementation will be key. A law becoming official is an important milestone, but patients still need clear information about what is covered, who may qualify and how to access care. OAC will continue following this process closely and sharing updates as more details become available.

Progress like this matters because people living with obesity deserve respectful, informed and accessible care.
