To accurately assess your child’s BMI-for-age percentile, follow these steps:

  1. Calculate Your Child’s BMI: Begin by determining your child’s Body Mass Index (BMI). You can do this by referring to a BMI chart designed specifically for children. Please click here to access the BMI chart, which provides appropriate weight and height ranges for children. If your child’s height falls outside the typical range for their age, BMI-for-age may be the most suitable indicator of their weight status.
  2. Locate Your Child’s Age: Once you have calculated your child’s BMI, identify their age on the bottom of the BMI chart.
  3. Plot the BMI: Now, using a pen or pencil (please print the chart if needed), mark the point on the graph that corresponds to your child’s BMI.
  4. Determine BMI-for-Age Percentile: To find your child’s BMI-for-age percentile, locate the shaded color that matches the point you plotted on the chart’s bottom. This will indicate your child’s percentile range.
  5. Identify Weight Status Category: To get a better understanding of your child’s weight status, refer to the Weight Status Category table located to the right of the chart below. This table will help you interpret your child’s BMI-for-age percentile.
