The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) is proud to share that a research project conducted in partnership with EfficientCME has been recognized as a Top Poster/Abstract Winner at the 2026 Obesity Medicine Association Annual Conference.
The study explored how people living with obesity and primary care providers view obesity diagnosis and treatment today. Supported by an educational grant from Eli Lilly and Company, the research surveyed 742 patients and 100 primary care physicians to better understand their experiences, perspectives and challenges.
The findings showed encouraging progress, but also highlighted important opportunities for improvement. While 93% of healthcare providers reported feeling comfortable discussing weight, only 64% of patients said they felt the same. The study also found that although many providers view obesity medications as effective and frequently discuss them with patients, these treatments are still prescribed less often than expected.
Another important finding was that 43% of patients reported hearing stigmatizing language from members of their healthcare team. This serves as an important reminder that the words used in healthcare settings matter and can impact a person’s experience and willingness to seek care.
The research team included obesity medicine experts, healthcare professionals and patient advocates, including Lisa Gresco-White, OAC Director of Membership and Development, and Michelle (Shelly) Vicari, OAC Director of Programs.
By bringing together the voices of patients and healthcare providers, this research helps identify gaps in care and opportunities for improvement. OAC is honored to have contributed to a project that supports more compassionate, science-based obesity care.
