Nicholas has navigated serious health challenges since childhood, including rapid weight gain tied to a rare genetic condition. Despite healthy habits and an active lifestyle, he still faced frustrating barriers to accessing additional treatments he needed, from GLP-1 medication to bariatric surgery, to help him move forward in his health journey. With perseverance, the steady support of his family and care team, and encouragement from Obesity Action Coalition’s Thrive Together Youth and Families Program, Nicholas has made meaningful progress toward his health goals, and his strength has been truly inspiring.

His journey is shared in a heartfelt article by his mom, Jessica Hackenburg, Obesity: A Chronic Disease That Ohio Cannot Ignore”. The article highlights the real challenges families face when navigating obesity as a chronic disease—barriers to treatment, insurance struggles and the emotional toll of advocating for care. Jessica’s story illustrates why programs like Thrive Together are so important: they provide support, resources and a community that truly understands.

Recently, Nicholas teamed up with other teens for a Thrive Together takeover of the OAC’s Instagram, where they shared a little about themselves and offered encouragement to other youth. Their energy and voices reminded us how powerful community can be when you’re finding your way. You can watch the full takeover on our Instagram Highlights.

Thrive Together empowers youth and families to thrive—not just survive. By joining, families gain access to education, support and a peer network that understands the journey firsthand.
