Millions of Americans living with obesity face barriers to accessing the treatment they need, including high out-of-pocket costs and limited coverage under Medicare and Medicaid. Thanks to the advocacy of thousands of supporters like you, today’s announcement marks a meaningful step toward breaking down these long-standing barriers to care.
OAC Applauds the Administration
The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) welcomes the Administration’s announcement of new agreements with pharmaceutical manufacturers to significantly lower the cost of several FDA-approved medications, including those used to treat obesity. Under the new agreements, Medicare beneficiaries will pay a co-pay of just $50 per month, making these life-changing treatments more affordable and accessible, and opening the door for Medicare and Medicaid to cover obesity drugs for adults.
OAC President and CEO Joe Nadglowski stated, “The OAC has long urged leaders across government and healthcare to make obesity care accessible and affordable. Today’s announcement represents a meaningful step toward improving access to evidence-based treatment options for millions of Americans living with obesity. Continued collaboration among policymakers, insurers, healthcare providers and systems will be critical to ensuring these changes reach everyone who needs them.” You can read the full press release here.
Why Your Voice Matters
Despite progress, Medicare’s prescription drug benefit (Part D) still excludes coverage for medications used for weight loss. Medicaid plans can also opt out of providing coverage. Earlier this year, more than 80 organizations sent a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) urging them to address the outdated policy and expand access to obesity medications through a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rule. Thousands of advocates also voiced their support by sending 2,500 messages to the administration. The Trump Administration’s plan is a direct result of those efforts.
