One of the biggest questions the OAC receives from our Community Members, supporters and followers is, “How can I get more involved? What else can I do to help individuals affected by obesity get the healthcare, treatment and resources they need?” If you’re asking yourself the same question, keep reading – there’s a new opportunity you can’t overlook!
Treat and Reduce Obesity Act of 2019 – Status: Underway
With the beginning of 2019 still underway, the OAC has our eyes set on the reintroduction of the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA) in Congress – and you should, too!
Why? This crucial legislation will address major insurance coverage gaps in obesity treatment for older Americans in the Medicare program. The passage of TROA would:
- Allow the Medicare program to cover FDA-approved obesity drugs. For 20 years, Congressional legislation has allowed both Medicare and State Medicaid programs to exclude coverage for “weight loss drugs.”
- Expand Medicare patients’ access to more diverse healthcare providers who can provide weight-loss counseling and behavioral therapy services.
With nearly 1 in 3 older Americans insured by Medicare and affected by obesity, and less than 1 percent able to access obesity care, this is legislation that Congress needs to pass!
If you’re thinking to yourself, “Okay, this involves policy and legislation, so it’s a bit higher level than what I’m able to contribute” don’t turn away just yet. The OAC is prepared to break the TROA down for you, help you understand the legislative process and show you that there’s nothing to be intimidated by. Oh, and taking action in support of TROA? That’s easy too.
Stay Tuned for More Info…
Throughout the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more information on TROA and why all of us – even those of us without Medicare – need to care about its journey through Congress.
Rest assured – we’ll need to rally OAC supporters to ensure TROA’s passage and educate our nation’s legislators on why obesity needs to be treated seriously!
Lots of OAC Action and education will take place during the month of February and beyond, so stay tuned to all the latest updates and resources right here on the OAC Community Blog.
