Support, education and connection can transform a journey—and for Casey Flowers, RD, her work with the Obesity Action Coalition has done just that. As a dietitian passionate about weight management and expanding access to care, Casey has dedicated her career to helping individuals living with obesity feel seen and supported.
Casey first connected with the OAC when Board Member Nina Crowley, PhD, RDN, LD reached out to invite her to speak at a Your Weight Matters Regional event. “It felt like a perfect alignment of mission and purpose,” she says. Since then, she has spoken at events in Mississippi, Kentucky and Georgia, meeting individuals eager to learn about obesity and how to advocate for themselves.
The OAC has also shaped how Casey approaches advocacy in her practice. With evolving insurance coverage, many patients feel frustrated about access to care. Using OAC resources, Casey equips them with the tools and language to advocate effectively with providers and insurers. “I don’t think I would have had this level of advocacy support or exposure without the OAC,” she reflects.
For Casey, being part of the OAC community means finding understanding and empowerment in a space that validates lived experiences. “Imagine walking into a doctor’s office and preparing for bias before even sitting down. Then you find a community that not only understands that experience but shares it,” she says. The OAC is a space to vent, learn, grow and finally feel supported.
One moment that captures Casey’s experience happened after a session when an attendee approached her. Years earlier, a negative experience with a dietitian had left them hesitant to seek help. After the event, they felt empowered to try again and pursue professional guidance. “If I can help even one person feel safe enough to pursue the care they deserve, I will always show up,” Casey says.
Casey hopes her story inspires others to take action. “You don’t have to show up confident, you just have to show up. The OAC will meet you where you are,” she emphasizes. Through the OAC, Casey has helped people connect with evidence-based care, find supportive providers and begin a journey toward self-acceptance and health.
