October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time to recognize the impact of bullying and advocate for respect, inclusion and understanding. At the Obesity Action Coalition, we are inspired by the courage of our Thrive Together teens who share their stories to help others feel seen and supported. One such teen is Annie, whose journey reminds us how powerful self-confidence and resilience can be.

“All through middle school I faced weight bias and bullying during PE, which made me afraid to run or do activities in front of others. Changing in locker rooms was also hard since that’s when many kids feel insecure. It was uncomfortable hearing from friends what others were saying about me, especially when people were calling me a hippo. It did not help that the school and counselor didn’t make me feel like I was going to see any change. I opened up to friends about how I felt but stayed quiet around the adults who needed to know.

Over time, I began to feel more confident and included. Some activities are still tough, but I don’t feel as judged anymore. If I could tell people going through what I went through, I’d say that what others think of you doesn’t matter—it never did and never will. The only opinion that truly matters is your own. Be proud, be confident and remember that everyone has struggles. We all deserve to be treated with respect and kindness.”

Annie’s story is a powerful reminder that no one should face bullying or weight bias alone. By fostering inclusion and respect, we can create environments where all kids feel included. This National Bullying Prevention Month, you can make a difference—support the Stop Weight Bias Fund and help fight weight-based stigma and bullying so every young person can thrive.
