Let Every Child Thrive: Inclusion for Kids with Obesity in Youth Activities
Background: Over 30% of girls and 24% of boys with excess weight report daily bullying, teasing and rejection. Weight bias and weight-based bullying can dramatically decrease quality of life and have devastating consequences on their development and well-being, such as poor mental and physical health, low self-esteem, depression and anxiety.
Every child deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Children in larger bodies often carry the weight of past experiences with shame, judgment and exclusion. Weight-based bullying in childhood can lead to lifelong avoidance of sports and a negative relationship with physical activity.
When kids are supported and included, they’re more likely to stay active, build friendships, and grow into healthier, happier adults. That’s why it’s so important that parents, caregivers, and youth leaders work together to create environments where every child feels they belong.
