Demand Cigna Restore GLP-1 Coverage for Employees

Here’s the Issue: Cigna ended coverage of GLP-1 medications used for weight management for its U.S. employees. The company has said the decision was made carefully, with research and input from leaders across the company, including clinical leaders, and has pointed to health coaching and other resources to support weight management.

Health coaching and other resources can play a role in comprehensive obesity care, but they are not substitutes for FDA-approved medication when a patient and healthcare provider determine it is an appropriate treatment. Obesity is a complex, chronic disease, and people living with obesity deserve access to the full range of science-based treatment options available to manage their health.

Cigna employees are already speaking up about the impact of this decision. Nearly 600 employees reportedly signed a petition asking the company to reinstate coverage. As a company whose work centers on healthcare and pharmacy benefits, Cigna has an opportunity to listen to its employees and demonstrate leadership by providing equitable access to comprehensive obesity care.
