Thank the Administration for Expanding Obesity Care
Background: For more than a decade, the OAC has advocated for coverage of comprehensive obesity care, including FDA-approved medications. Under current law, Medicare’s prescription drug benefit (Part D) excludes “agents when used for anorexia, weight loss, or weight gain”. This exclusion has prevented Medicare from covering obesity medications and has allowed Medicaid plans to opt out of providing such coverage.
The Trump Administration announced a plan to lower costs and expand coverage of obesity medications. The plan would enable coverage of obesity medications for 3.4 million Medicare beneficiaries and 4 million Medicaid recipients. Medicare beneficiaries will pay a co-pay of just $50 per month. This is major step toward equitable healthcare access, with the potential to influence private insurance coverage nationwide.
