Support Removal of Kentucky Medicaid Ban on Obesity Medications

Background: For years, state law has long prohibited Kentucky Medicaid from covering medications used for weight loss — even those that are FDA-approved and clinically proven to improve health outcomes. A proposed amendment (907 KAR 23:010) was filed with the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission on September 9, 2025 that would remove the prohibition language.

Kentucky ranks 9th in the nation for obesity, affecting more than 34% of adults and costing the state an estimated $36 billion annually. Removing this outdated prohibition is a vital step toward modernizing obesity care in Kentucky. Allowing Medicaid to consider coverage for evidence-based treatments, including obesity medications, will give healthcare providers more tools to help patients manage this chronic disease effectively.
