Support the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act to Expand Obesity Care and Treatment Coverage for ALL!
Healthcare and Obesity: An Overview
Each day in the United States, millions of Americans face barriers when trying to access healthcare services for obesity and its related conditions. From finding the right healthcare provider to navigating the complicated insurance process, many individuals struggle to find the support and resources they need to manage their weight and health effectively.
However, healthcare costs related to obesity exceed $400 billion each year. In part, that’s because obesity is associated with more than 40 related health conditions – including diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, some cancers, GERD, heart disease, arthritis and more. With a majority of Americans at risk for serious obesity-related chronic diseases, obesity has become a healthcare and financial epidemic requiring access to a full range of safe and effective treatment options.
The Importance of Passing the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act
The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA) – S. 830/H.R.1953 – is a landmark piece of legislation that will provide Medicare beneficiaries with meaningful tools to reduce obesity by improving access to weight-loss counseling and new prescription medications for chronic weight management.
Why is TROA so important if its targeted audience is so specific? This legislation is relevant to ALL Americans because private and employer-based insurance plans are often modeled off of Medicare coverage.
Specifically, TROA will:
- Expand Medicare benefit for intensive behavioral counseling through community-based programs and additional types of healthcare providers, including: dietitians, psychologists and specialty physicians; and
- Expand coverage of FDA-approved prescription drugs for chronic weight management.
But remember, obesity is a condition that requires life-long management – and whether or not you receive Medicare currently, future need for its services may benefit your healthcare later down the road when managing obesity long-term.
That means that rules and policies established through TROA ultimately impact and shape the future of obesity-related healthcare services for all of us – and that’s a big deal!
