Find a Bariatric Physician or Surgeon Specializing in Obesity Treatment
Finding the right treatment option for obesity can be very difficult. The OAC provides individuals affected by obesity with a wide range of resources to help them in their weight-loss journey and treatment selection process; however, one of the top requests that the OAC receives daily is from individuals seeking recommendations for bariatric physicians or surgeons.
For those of you who may not be familiar with how a bariatric physician or surgeon can help you, let’s take a closer look at each one for a moment:
Bariatric Physician (Physician-supervised Weight-loss)
Bariatric physicians offer physician-supervised weight-loss programs, also known as Clinician Assisted Weight-loss, in a clinical setting with additional licensed healthcare professionals, such as a nurse, registered dietitian and others. These programs offer services such as nutrition education, pharmacotherapy (medications), physical activity and behavioral therapy. Physician-supervised weight-loss programs are designed to provide treatment to individuals affected by obesity with assistance, support and treatment for weight and weight-related problems.
Bariatric Surgeon (Bariatric Surgery)
Bariatric surgeons provide individuals affected by severe obesity with an in-depth weight-loss program centered on a bariatric surgery procedure, such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, gastric banding and others. These programs utilize healthcare professionals, such as a dietitian, exercise physiologist and more to help you maximize your weight-loss and improve your health.

The ABOM was established in 2011 to serve the public and the field of obesity medicine through the establishment and maintenance of criteria and procedures for examination and certification of candidate physicians who seek recognition of their accomplishments in obesity medicine. Physicians who complete the ABOM certification process in obesity medicine are designated Diplomates of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
