Weight bias, stigma, and discrimination are no longer unique issues, and becoming more common in our society. Media can negatively shame those affected by obesity by using headless imagery, or not using People-First Language when talking about obesity. Employers can pass over a candidate for a job or promotion simply based on their weight. Healthcare providers can ignore symptoms from someone who is affected by obesity, and attribute the problem to their weight, which can lead to missed diagnoses. Some policy makers who believe weight is all a matter of personal responsibility and willpower refuse to take actions that would improve access to obesity care.
The discrimination can take a negative toll on anyone, both negatively and physically. That’s why the OAC fights actively against any weight bias issue- whether it is from an employer, healthcare provider, or policy maker. If you feel like you’ve experienced a weight bias issue, please click here to report it.
With the recent efforts of Congress to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act, we need your help to pass the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA). If passed, TROA would provide Medicare beneficiaries and their healthcare providers with tools to reduce obesity by improving access to weight-loss counseling and prescription medications for chronic weight management.
This important piece of legislation is important to everyone because many private and employer-based insurance plans base their coverage on matching Medicare coverage.
Currently there are 95 co-sponsors on the House side and 7 on the senate side, and you can support TROA’s passage by urging both of your Senators as well as your House of Representatives member to co-sponsor and support this critical legislation. The OAC makes it easy to contact your legislative officials when you visit the OAC’s Legislative Action Center. You can even include your own personal story to help them better understand the need for expanding access to these critical obesity treatment tools!
