They go by a hundred different names – “Low Fat,” “Low Carb,” “High Protein,” “Atkins,” “Pritikin,” “Zone,” “Mediterranean,” “Okinawan,” “Blood Type,” “Gluten Free,” and many, many more. Despite their differences they all claim to be the right diet, the best diet, the diet that will make you thin and probably fix other ills as well.
Have you ever stopped to wonder how they can all be right?
I used to tell my patients that if you followed all the expert diet advice out there you could eat nothing – after all, carbs are bad, fats are bad, sugar is bad, animal protein is bad, soy is bad, wheat is bad, dairy is bad, fast food is bad, GMO is bad, juice is bad, soda is bad. If we followed all the expert advice, we would starve very quickly on a diet of filtered water. And perhaps kale – I think most experts agree that kale is ok.
In this blog series, we will explore a few dietary concepts. I don’t have a year, so I am going to look at “Low Carb” (and roll high protein into this), “Low Fat,” and “Mediterranean.” However, if you have a particular diet that you really want me to address, let me know and I’ll try to see what I can do.
I doubt that I can clear up all the mythology and all the disagreements (after all, many of the top researchers in the world still don’t agree on what a healthy diet is for humans) – but we can explore what is out there and (hopefully) have a bit of fun trying.
