Get to Know Us – Jaime Fivecoat, MBA

Jaime Fivecoat, MBA

1. How did you become involved with the OAC?

I joined the OAC at one of the first public meeting presentations given by Joe. We were both presenters at an event in Celebration, Fla. Prior to the event, I had heard that the OAC was attempting to form and that Joe had been hired as its President. I was member number six. I believed strongly that we (those dealing with obesity) needed a voice and wanted to be involved with the organization that could provide that voice. Being both a patient and a professional in employee benefits, I was fortunate enough a few months later to be asked to become a member of the Board. I am honored to continue in that role.

2. Have you personally dealt with obesity, and if so, how has it impacted your life?

I am a RnY Gastric Bypass patient from 2003. The impact of that decision and action has been life changing. Prior to the surgery I was not only affected by severe obesity, but also suffered from numerous co-morbidities. Dealing with my obesity treated these issues and allowed me to live a much more fulfilling life. It gave me an experience that later helped me realize I could also deal with other aspects of my health and life that are still in process.  Just the experiences of working with the OAC has allowed me to enjoy events from being on the Today Show, speaking nationally to advocate for our cause, getting to know some of the most intelligent and dedicated people associated with treating obesity, and to advocate on Capitol Hill for our cause.

3. What is your favorite part about being a board member of the OAC?

My favorite part of being on the Board is working with and getting to know my fellow Board members and the staff. I had the honor and privilege of being the first Chair of the Board, and those three years were the most amazing volunteer experience I have ever had.

4. Why is the OAC valuable in advocating for obesity awareness?

The value of the OAC’s is that we are the primary voice of those who seek treatment for the disease of obesity. We are the patients, the researchers, the medical professionals, the caregivers, and the people who care about those who suffer from obesity. By all of us coming together we have and will continue to make a difference.

5. What is one goal that you want to accomplish as a board member?

To ensure that anyone who wants and needs treatment for obesity will be able to get it. We still have a long way to go.

6. What is your favorite film?

7. What is your fondest memory from this past year?

The love and support I have received from my wife Karen as I make some major life changes.

8. If you could’ve had any career other than your current one, what would it have been?

A professional singer (never had enough talent though).

9. What is your favorite place to vacation?

A cruise ship

10. What is your most prized possession?

My Infiniti G37s convertible
