Georgia Chapter of the ASMBS Honored with the Obesity Action Coalition’s
“Community Leader of the Year” Award
The Georgia Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) was honored with the Obesity Action Coalition’s (OAC) “Community Leader of the Year” award during the 3rd Annual Your Weight MattersSM National Convention, Together We S.H.I.N.E.
Working in conjunction with the OAC for the past three years, the Georgia Chapter of ASMBS played an integral role in helping to restore the bariatric surgery benefit for Georgia state employees. In a time when there were so few treatment resources for individuals affected by severe obesity, the Georgia Chapter of ASMBS truly stepped to the forefront of the fight and advocated for coverage of bariatric surgery.
“If there is one word I would use to describe the Georgia Chapter of ASMBS, it would be ‘dedication.’ The Georgia Chapter stood side-by-side with the OAC as we advocated for the restoration of coverage for bariatric surgery. Too often we lose access to life-saving procedures, such as bariatric surgery, because of state budget constraints. In this situation, the Georgia Chapter and the OAC accomplished an unbelievable task in educating state lawmakers on why the need for bariatric surgery coverage was so important. We thank the Georgia Chapter for their support and dedication,” said Ted Kyle, RPh, MBA, OAC Chairman.
